A single hydrogen atom, sitting in its ground state. The diagram shows the allowed energy levels En = −13.6/n² eV, packed up against the ionisation line at the top. Grab the electron and drag it up to a higher level to give it some energy; watch what happens next, and watch the strip at the bottom.
